THE MONEY GARDEN:   We are planting a small raised bed at the garden center to show how easy it is to grow a few vegetables organically. Burpee have donated a combination packet of seeds titled the money garden. ( a selection of Tomato, bell peppers, carrots, peas and beans.)We will follow this on Wnep's Home and Backyard or you can come and visit the garden center to see for yourself..Warts and all!

This is Clydes Garden planner. It allows me to select the correct planting times for all the vegetables I'll grow. The red line is adjusted to the average last frost date and it's easy to read off the planting times.

It is available from Clyde at

This is the raised bed. It's made from three 2x12x12 regular lumber. I cut one in half and used some metal corner braces from lowes to hold the together.  As there is no real soil below I choose 12" depth to allow for better growth. Pressure treated wood contains toxins that can leach into the soil and possible into the vegetables.

April 8th.

My son Will and i start added to the soil. They grey matter is a gritty sand . It helps give the soil structure and can inhibit tunnelling rodents!

Things are really starting to move. In the cold frame I have taken a risk and planted peppers and tomatoes. The cold frame should keep them warm enough.

Peas can be planted while frost is about. These are germinating nicely. The close up shows the grit I have added to the soil for drainage and rodent prevention.
