April 1st 2002
Creating a vista of the skyline has a
constantly changing view. At home, we have kept open the the view of
the horizon where the sun sets.
30th May 00
The spreading Yellow flag iris . It's so
easy to grow but can dominate natural ponds. It is excellent when
planted in containers in liner ponds.
29th May 00
Miss Kim lilac is now in full flower. A
medium size shrub 5'x5' but it's the glorious fragrance that earn it a
place in my garden
Plain old garden chives. They grow any
where have pretty flowers and you can eat them ..No wonder they crop
up all over the garden center.
The seeds of lunaria are developing.
Always let some germinate this year since they will flower next. They
are biennials like foxgloves.
Here is our Shasta viburnum just starting
to flower. These wonderfully broad shrubs have a stunning array of
white flowers. The flowers look particularly effect in front of the
Newport plum. 24thMay 00
A field of Hesperis matronalis. Although
it's a European import, it looks like a field of summer phlox
but only in spring.
May 21 00
Matilda sitting in front of a half whisky
barrel we have just planted. She looks pretty happy with the
result...now if only the children would tidy up their toys!
Viburnum opulus roseum...or in more
straightforward speak, the common snowball. Great at filling
areas dies well in part shade conditions as well as sunny
areas
The wonderfully fragrant 'Miss Kim' lilac
is now in full bloom. It is much smaller than the the French
hybrids and will not sucker and get mildew.
One more wonderful Tree peony.
The flowers are truly exquisite. It's a shame they only appear this
part of spring. The tree peonies have woody stems and are better
at keeping their flowers standing tall. No support needed.
Creeping thyme in flower.
As long as you have great drainage these wonderful plants survive
beautifully. We sell a whole range of varieties. They can be used to
fill in between pavers
20th May
Centaurea montana or
mountain bluet. The flower is magnificent with its blue and pink
mixes. It's an easy perennial to grow and will seed itself all over
the place.
One of the under used
perennials. Amsonia or milk weed has a pretty blue star like flower
now. It's in the fall when it comes into its own..the foliage turns a
stunning yellow..It's brilliant!
20th May
A proud grower! The iris 'Immortality' is a
beautiful white that also blooms in the fall. This is my kind of iris.
Princeton Gold Maple- One of the brightest yellow foliage
trees we sell. The color is outstanding. It is a Norway maple so you can't win everything!
Our yellow garden down by our waterfall.
Brightens up a shady area. Filipendula, golden carex, trollius all add to the impact!
There are some plants that are just stunning...Lemon Queen Trollius in
flower is one of these gems.
The lovely foam flower. I have planted
this gem last year in an area with more moisture.. It seems to be
going great guns..I have lost a couple in drier areas.
some varieties have wonderful foliage too!
Solomon's seal. A great ground cover.
Harry's Garden has a collection of wonderful ones: The variegated
variety, the giant one and an dwarf one. We are gradually filling this
garden with all kinds of ground covers.
Our tree peonies are coming into flower...spectacular!
I have planted two more this year...a brilliant clear yellow and a red
one...I can't wait to see them next year
15th May 00
Lithodora in the rock garden.
The color is electric!
Marginal plants on our pond. The variegated flag iris is
particularly attractive this time of year. Next to it is glycera..spreading like crazy!
14th May00
Forthergilla. This lovely native shrub is
coming to the end of its flowering period. Now we can wait for the stunning fall foliage
We let common chives seed themselves wherever they want.
Behind them is the larger ornamental onion "Purple Sensation' As seen from our cafe
terrace.
14th May 00
A colourful part of our cafe terrace. Lots
of intermingling!
Fothergilla and berberis on left and a variety of perennials in the fore
ground..It's sometimes easy to forget these little areas in the colder seasons. 10thMay
One of the really attractive late blooming narcissus. Its
been a great spring for the daffodils. It is always a great idea to choose late and early
bloomers to extend your season
10th May
Daphne Craol Mackie. Now in full flower and
full fragrance. A wonderful shrub for you garden
One of the curly willows. You can see why they are so
popular.
Attractive in spring and throughout the year.
They look wonderful with a heavy snow fall on them 10th May
Bearberry. An excellent ground cover for
sunny dry beds
The wonderful but slow growing European ginger. It grows
well in the shade and its shiny leaves add refreshing gloss to the underplanting
One of the newer ajugas. This one is called
chocolate. The darker and smaller leaves make it a very attractive plant for rock gardens.
A gem of a flower crabapple. This variety is called
Adirondack. It's a small upright version. Like all good ornamental crabs, the fruit stays
on the tree throughout the winter. Its bright red color makes it an outstanding tree. 10th
May
The Double flowering Boodroot. I have
waited 5 years for one flower and a one leaf!
5th May00
A lovely violet for your garden.
They seed themselves freely and tend to be excellent perennials
5th May
Saucer type magnolia. The smaller hybrids
like Jane and betty do very well in our climate
5th May
Vinca minor or the common myrtle. Can be be an excellent
ground cover and looks gorgeous with its spring flowers
