FALL FLOWERS & FOLIAGE
How about this for a foliage contrast? The lime green of one of the new coleus with the soft green of a fern. Very cool

24th September 2000

The upright panicum Heavy Metal planted behind the stunning blue flowers of Caryopteris Dark Knight. A delightful combination

24th September 2000

Asters are an overlooked American gem. I just love the big color they introduce into the fall garden. This one is Harringtons Pink

24th September 2000

The flowers of the ground cover Hypericum calycicum appear throughout the summer . I took this picture down by our water fall.

24th September 2000

One of the secrets of a great winter garden is to have lots of colored berries . The blue berries of this Arrowwood viburnum fit this bill. It can grow in shade and wet conditions

24th September 2000

Some thing unusual? The shell like flowers of this cosmos are certainly eye catching. It is now looking delightful.
The toad lily has wonderful orchid like flowers that have just started opening now . Great for partial shade

24th September 2000

Talking of shade plants this polygonum is one of the best. It is still in full flower as you can see. I can't remember its name Foxtail or Fire tail ...

24th September 2000

Hot dry sunny conditions and late flowers. You can't beat the bush clover or Lespedeza. It grows 3-4' tall

24th September 2000

Golden rods are in flower in the wild. How about one of these brilliant little ones that are great in the garden. This one is called "Golden Fleece".

24th September 2000

Another New England Aster
The white bleeding heart flowers all through the summer and into the fall
The snakeroot or cimicifuga has wonderful bottlebrush flowers now. They are quite fragrant!
This is one of the longest blooming campanula's I know. It is called Kent Belle. The color is to die for.

24th September 2000

One of the first grasses to flower. The feather reed grass looks great in the fall and winter.

Can be planted with Rudbeckia 'Goldsturm' in masses. The grass can grow in all kinds of conditions wet or dry.

22nd September

Ilex verticillata or winterberries start to look great this time of year. The berries can last most of the winter too. Good source of food for the birds.

22nd September

Chelone or the Turtle Head is a native plant that flowers at my home this time of year. It is very hardy and can take poor conditions.

22nd September

One of my favorite fall flowers is the Monkshood orAconitum  napellus. The color is stunning and, what is great, is that the deer leave it alone because it is poisonous.

22nd September

The Japanese anemone can flower thtoughout fall. Each year my clumps have been getting bigger and bigger. They like reasonably good soil and a reasonable amount of sunshine.

22nd September

Some flowers come back in the fall. This is one of the spiderworts (Tradescantia)

The white is exceptionally bright. These plants act as ground covers spreading quite quickly.

22nd September

Viburnum plicatum "Summer Snowflake"

22nd September

Delospermum
Aster with a golden Chamaecyparis
Eryngium yuccafolium
The Autumn crocus or Colchicum. This is the double flowering variety.
