A lot of
gardens have faded by the end of August. We are at our best. We have
the best collection of flowers for fall and late summer. We always
post a selection of what's in flower by our front door.

most popular fountains. The frog lying on a lily pad blowing water
out of his mouth. He can be used outdoors in the summer and indoors
in the winter.

The lovely
native heleniums...Rich in colors from yellow to red...They are late
blooming gems that are often overlooked in the average garden.

| This is the
flower of Kyushu hydrangea. The flowers are massive. Like all PG
types they can be cut back and they still flower every year.

We still have
some lovely clematis in flower. Very soon the sweet autumn clematis
will be in flower. However there are some excellent varieties in the
vitcella group that are always in flower. The variety Polish spirit
is a fine example and we have it growing in several places at the
garden center.

"Desdemona" is a flowering machine. It's great to have
such a big flowering display for our shade garden.

This is the
daylily Sandra Elizabeth. It's an absolute gem and it's in full
flower right now when most of the the other ones have stopped or are
putting on a mediocre performance.

| This is one of
my favorite Hydrangea. The late panicle hydrangea is now in full
flower. Its great to have flowers appearing this time of year. And
these ones last for so long.

close up of the the late panicle flower. It's a very sophisticated
form...a mixture of sterile flower buds and full open ones.

Bottlebrush buckeye (Aesculus parvia) in full flower. The deer don't
touch these and they make quite a large shrub.12th August 2002

Some
mysterious? No just the flower of the globe thistle (Echinops) we
have some great specimens to look at and a wonderful new crop to
purchase. They love sun and dry conditions...a great plant for our
summers.

swamp hibiscus (Kopper King) Lovely dark foliage is its trademark.
They look excellent next to the Indian Summer Rudbeckia.

There are lots
of the Pee Gee type Hydrangeas available. This is the flower of
Kyushu. Quick growing and flowers mid summer to fall. They can be
cut back to refresh themselves. Great for cut flowers.

| One of the
great mid summer flowers. The butterfly bush or Buddleia. This is
Black Knight a lovely deep purple that is an absolute
butterfly magnet. They are easy to grow if you have a sunny well
drained area. The need to be pruned in the spring when you can see
what is alive or what is dead.

This is the
rudbeckia triloba. It's taller than the common and Goldsturm. It
flowers a little longer in the season too. It seeds itself
everywhere!
