The Philadelphia Flower Show 2000

Come and share some of the highlights of our visit to the Show. I took these photographs while we were filming for Home & Backyard... a fun filled show as usual! Saturdays 7pm.

As always there's plenty to see. Here is a lovely landscape design ..lots of perennials, an
interesting arbor. Little features like the plants growing out of the flag stones make it very special.
My only complaint is the crowds sometimes make it difficut to appreciate all the fine detail!

Vendors feature prominently.. here is part of a display from a retailer of New Hope. The lying Wild hog is absolutely brilliant.
There is something for all tastes...looks like a sculpture from Easter Island

wpe1.gif (815649 bytes) Plants feature strongly as always. The PHS  introduced the gold medal award for woodies of outstanding landscape value. Here I snapped a picture of the weigela "Wine and Roses" . This is a great little shrub; the foliage has a purple tint( The more sun the better) and the flowers pink. It is a very disease resistant and carefree shrub.
In their special exhibit visitors can learn about the gold medal award system. Each year a group of 'woodies' is chosen for outstanding horticultural merit. Winterberries, Deutzia , Dogwood crosses. aronia and many more have been awarded the gold Medal. Click on the link below to visit Gold medal winners

wpe3.gif (207224 bytes) Philadelphia Green is strongly represented with its Philadephia 2100 exhibit. The flower show  donates a considerable amount of time and effort in improving urban areas with horticulture. Tree plantings, container plantings and ground covers are used freely to soften the harsh urban environment.
What flower show would be complete without its flowers. Some of the exhibits were truly wonderous this year. This display was particularly eyecatching. The time and effort put into such creations is mind boggling....as long as they didn't take the flowers from my garden wpe5.gif (603591 bytes)
wpe6.gif (759884 bytes) Modern or when does modern become dated?
An interesting design of the modern school ..can I just ask about the lawn maintenance scheme?..you need a very small lawn mower here.. still it inspires thought ...I liked the silhouetted bamboo.

Have you seen this before ?

The Art of Bonsai being taught.
A famous Bonsai Artist busy at work instructing pupils on bonsai. I think this was a new exhibit  and another sign of the 'Hands on ' feeling about this year's show. Seminars were being held all over the place

wpe9.gif (681826 bytes) A tower of flower.
This massive creation is something I go for.  Using some large tender perennials like canna and sweet potato vine  this display will give months of enjoyment. It can be used as a screen on a deck or a center piece in a bed. The larger the container, the easier it is to maintain.
